Chakkera Pongali is most popular in South States. In any special occation or any festival this Traditional Recipe – Chakkera Pongali has to be prepared in most families. Offering this to Godess Durga Devi will shower her blessings on our entire family.
This Traditional / Festival Recipe will be prepare on different styles some will use Moong Dal or some try to avoid this Dal and prepare the plane Chakkera Pongali. By preparing this sweet pongal we have used the following main ingredients like – Moong Dal, Rice, Cow Ghee, Jaggery, Sugar, Fresh Coconut, and some Dry Fruits.
Most important thing is to keep in mind is that, if we are preparing this Chakkera Pongali for offering called “Naivedhyam” it to God / Goddess, use only Fresh and Pure Cow Ghee Only. In most of the South Temples this recipe will be offered “Naivedhyam” to the Gods.
This Chakkera Pongali can be served in both Hot or Cold. In our house we used to serve it in a luke warm. Kids like to eat and enjoy alot. This Chakkera Pongali will be served along with the meals – Lunch / Dinner.

- Moong dal – 2/3rd cup
- Rice – 1 cup
- Water – 4 cups
- Jaggery – 1 cup
- Sugar – 1/2 cup
- Fresh coconut – 1/2 cup, finely chopped
- Cashew – 4 tbsp
- Raisins – 4 tbsp
- Cardamom powder – 1 tbsp
- Edible camphor – pinch
- Ghee (clarified butter) – 1/4th cup
Step 1 Roast 2/3rd cup of moong dal in a pan for 2 min on medium flame.
Step 2 Roast upto golden brown. do not burn dal.
Step 3 Now transfer roasted moong dal into a bowl.
Step 4 Rinse the moong dal with water 2 times.
Step 5 Add rinsed moong dal in to pressure cooker.
Step 6 Add 1 cup of rice washed and cleaned.
Step 7 Add 4 cups of water.
Step 8 Wait for 3 whistles on high flame.
Step 9 Meanwhile prepare sugar syrup in another pan by adding 1 cup of jaggery and 1/2 cup of sugar and 1/4th cup of water.
Step 10 Stir well until jaggery and sugar melts.
Step 11 when bubbles comes just check for the string consistancy. If you find string consistancy just turn off the flame.
Step 12 Now add the sugar syrup to cooked rice in the pressure cooker. Sieve the syrup to remove the dust in jaggery.
Step 13 Mix gently, dont break the rice and Simmer for 2 minutes.
Step 14 Take another pan and add 2 tbsp of ghee, 1/2 cup of fresh coconut and roast well.
Step 15 When coconut fried 50 % then add cashew and raisins.
Step 16 Roast all ingredients upto golden brown on simmer.
Step 17 Add roasted coconut and dryfruits and 1/4th cup of ghee, cardamom powder and edible camphor in the pongal.
Step 18 Mix all ingredients and combine well. simmer for 1 more minute.
Step 19 Thats it tasty tasty chakkera pongali / sweet pongal is ready to serve. This is the most famous recipe to offer Goddess Lakshmi especially in Dasara and Sravanamasam.
