Katte pongali / Ven pongal is one of the popular south indian breakfast recipe prepared with rice and moong dal. This is also called as Khara Pongal. It is offered to godess durga as naivedyam on dasara and during regular pooja and other festivals as well.

Actually Ven pongal / khara pongal is a south indian recipe made as dal khichdi. This is a quick and easy recipe to prepare and very light to stomach. It can be use for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

It takes less than 30 min to prepare including chutney. This pongal is also made with millets, oats, and quinoa. We need to just replace the rice with millets, oats or quinoa. Here this is prepared as naivedyam pongal so i used only cow ghee for tampering.

INGREDIENTS

Pongali preperation:

  • Rice – 1/2 cup
  • Moongdal – 1/2 cup
  • water – 4 cups

Tampering:

  • Ghee – 3 tbsp
  • Cumin – 1 tbsp
  • Black pepper – 1 tbsp, crushed
  • Green chillies – 1 tbsp, chopped
  • Ginger – 1 tbsp, chopped
  • Cashew – 3 tbsp
  • Curry leaves – few

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1In a pressure cooker add 1/2 cup of rice and 1/2 cup of moong dal, both are rinsed two times

Step 2 Now add 4 cups of water and 1 tbsp of salt and stir well

Step 3 Close lid and wait for 3 whistles on high flame

Step 4 After3 whistles rice and moong dal cooked well and smooth. Mix it once.

Step 5 Now take a tampering pan, add ghee, cumin, black pepper, greenchillies, ginger, cashew and curry leaves

Step 6 saute for 1 min on medium flame

Step 7 Add the prepared tampering in cooked rice and mix and combine well

Step 8 Katter pongali / ven pongal is ready to serve. Serve this recipe hot. Do not let it cool.

Step 9 Serve this with sambar or coconut chutney. This is also used as naivedyam on dasara festival.
