Sweet pongal / sakkarai pongal is a delicious south indian dish made with rice, moong dal, milk, jaggery and dry fruits. It is mostly used to offer godess lakshmi on dasara and other festivals. This is prepared same as chakkera pongali / sakkarai pongal but small variation is this recipe made with milk where as in chakkera pongali we dont use milk.
This is prepared on the day of makara sankranti or pongal festival. This dish is prepared by our ancestors to signify and celebrate prosperity after the harvest.
Many temples in south india offer sweet pongal to the gods during special pooja. Even in normal fridays or tuesdays we offer this recipe to godess lakshmi & durga at our homes. But this is offen prepared on dasara navratri or varalakshmi pooja and pongal festivals.

- Cow Ghee – 4 tbsp
- Fresh coconut – 1/2 cup, chopped
- Cashew – 3 tbsp
- Raisins – 2 tbsp
- Milk – 500ml, diluted 1 cup of water
- Rice – 1/2 cup
- Moong dal – 1/2 cup
- Jaggery – 1/2 cup
- Sugar – 1/2 cup
- Salt – 1/4th tbsp
- Cardamom powder – 1 tbsp
Step 1In a pan add 4 tbsp of cow ghee, and finely chopped coconut and roast for 2 min until they turn into golden
Step 2 Once coconut turns into golden add cashew and raisins and roast again
Step 3 Cashew and coconut pieces fried golden brown and raisins puffedup. Keep this aside.
Step 4 In a kadai add 500ml of milk and let it boil
Step 5When the milk is boiling add rice and moong dal and stir once.
Step 6 Close lid and cook for 15 min on medium flame. stir occationally.
Step 7 After 15 minutes rice cooked 70%. Stir once
Step 8 Add 1 cup of milk and stir well
Step 9 Close lid and cook again for 10 minutes on simmer.
Step 10 After 10 minutes rice cooked 100% smooth and soft.
Step 11 Now add fried coconut and dryfruits, Jaggery, sugar, salt and cardamom powder
Step 12 Stir well and turn off immediately, otherwise milk will curdles because of jaggery.
Step 13 Moongdal sweet pongal is ready to offer godess lakshmi for pooja.
